Director of Programming, Arts & Youth Development

Full- time (40 hours/week)

 

Voices UnBroken is a Bronx-based non-profit organization that is dedicated to providing under-heard members of the community – primarily youth, ages 12-24 – with the tools and opportunity for self-expression. Through high quality creative writing workshops in group homes, residential treatment facilities, jails, juvenile justice facilities, and various other alternative and transitional settings, Voices UnBroken nurtures the inherent need in all people to tell their stories. It is our belief that this telling of stories and sharing of dreams leads to individual and community growth.

 

The Director of Programming, Arts & Youth Development works in concert with the Executive Director to ensure the services provided to the young people Voices UnBroken serves are high quality, efficient, and embody Voices UnBroken’s core values and mission. In addition, the Director of Programming, Arts & Youth Development creates and maintains a collaborative artistic community for our Teaching Artists/Workshop Facilitators and provides support, feedback, and professional development opportunities with the goal of deepening impact on our participants.

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Ensure smooth operations of all aspects of workshop programming including scheduling, site and direct service staff correspondence and relationships, data collection/ analysis, etc.

  • Supervise and work with Program Coordinator to ensure all logistical aspects of workshop programming are running as efficiently as possible.

  • Sustain a staff of at least 10 experienced Teaching Artists/Workshop Facilitators including all aspects of recruiting, hiring, on-boarding, formal and informal supervision and evaluation.

  • Provide on-going, customized, experiential group and individual professional development opportunities including but not limited to the following areas:

    • The Practice of Youth Development

    • The Craft of Poetry

    • Trends and Reforms in the Field of Juvenile Justice

    • Creating Safe and Ethical Spaces for Young People

    • Reflective and Intentional Facilitation

    • Relationship Building with Site Staff and Partners

    • Trauma Informed Care

  • Manage and enhance digital and physical resource center for teaching artists/workshop facilitators

  • Nurture relationships with current and potential workshop sites and build partnerships with others in the field to collaborate on programming, projects, and events

  • Collaborate with Executive Director to periodically evaluate and modify organization-wide systems and tools as well as documentation and evaluation of programs

  • Enhance and sustain culture of reflection, feedback and support throughout programming

  • Outreach to other arts organizations and to the NYC arts community in general about Voices UnBroken’s programs and employment opportunities

  • Represent the organization at conferences and events

  • Assist with special events

  • Other duties, as necessary

 

 

Qualifications:

 

Required

  • Experience working with young people who are in the juvenile justice or foster care systems

  • At least five years of experience facilitating arts-based workshops with youth in non-school settings

  • Knowledge of poetry, arts education, and community arts

  • Knowledge of positive youth development work

  • Experience facilitating or co-facilitating trainings

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Computer savvy – comfortable using MS Office (Word, Excel, etc)

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Detail oriented

  • Must work well in collaboration with others

  • Must work well independently

  • Must have a willingness to learn and share

  • Must have a commitment to working in the Bronx

  • Willingness to travel throughout New York City (to ALL boroughs)

  • Bachelor’s Degree

Preferred

  • Experience working with non-profit youth/arts organizations

  • Familiarity with recent research in post-traumatic growth

  • Passion for arts administration

  • Experience with program documentation and evaluation

  • Experience with community partnerships and contract management

  • Familiarity with publication design and layout

 

Position reports directly to the Executive Director

Hours: M-F 10-6, with some evenings and weekends required

Location: Voices UnBroken Office, 1414 Metropolitan Avenue, 2nd Floor, Bronx, NY 10462
