Voices UnBroken Teaching Artist/Workshop Facilitator 

This is a part-time position (approximately 5-15 hrs per week, $25 per hour)


Voices UnBroken is a Bronx-based non-profit organization that is dedicated to providing under-heard members of the community – primarily youth, ages 12-24 – with the tools and opportunity for self-expression. Through high quality creative writing workshops in juvenile justice facilities, group homes, residential treatment facilities, jails, and various other alternative and transitional settings, Voices UnBroken nurtures the inherent need in all people to tell their stories and be heard. 

We are seeking experienced and dynamic teaching artists/youth development professionals for immediate opportunities, as well as throughout the academic year and summer.

Successful candidates will demonstrate strong professional experience in their respective discipline with teens and/or young adults. Our Teaching Artist must have a passion for creative youth development, along with strong classroom management skills and be able to facilitate discussions for reflection. Experience working with at-risk youth in non-school settings (including, but not limited to jails, juvenile justice facilities, group homes, and drug treatment programs) is a plus.



  • Commit to the duration of the program (semester or project based-engagements).

  • Deliver accurate and timely documentation, including attendance, evaluations and assessments, lesson plans, etc., as required.

  • Collaborate with program and executive staff to develop lesson planning and implement materials for each workshop session. 

  • Represent Voices UnBroken in interactions with program partners and other stakeholders. 

  • Respectful communication with partner staff and workshop participants.  

  • Participate in professional development sessions and staff meetings. 

  • Commit to the artistic process as a vehicle for youth development. 

  • Prepare student work for exhibitions, events and Voices UnBroken’s publications.

  • Other duties, as necessary



  • A commitment to youth development and the mission of Voices UnBroken.

  • Minimum of three years experience teaching, poetry/creative writing in either school or community-based settings.

  • BA/BFA in Arts, Education or a firm educational and/or practical background in creative writing.  NY teacher certification in creative writing, a plus.

  • Experience working in youth development with teens and young adults, teaching well-developed enrichment courses, social consciousness, self-identity and efficacy.

  • Strong facilitation, communication, and interpersonal skills.  

  • Comfortable with solo facilitation and working independently. 

  • Energetic, motivated self-starter and a team player with a can-do attitude, and multiple transferable skills who is willing to collaborate with staff and volunteers.

  • Knowledgeable about poetry, poetic devices, and analyzing poetry, and have a repertoire of successful poetry activities is a plus. 

  • Willingness and ability to travel throughout the five boroughs to facilitate workshops. 

  • Must be available during afterschool/early evening hours.
